| Where I always start running - uphill |
Saturday started our first heat wave of summer, and while it's great for warming the community pool, it's not great for running. Add to that the DC area humidity and at times it feels like you are moving through water.
I decided to switch up the days I run in preparation for school ending in a few weeks. I'll probably drag my 6 year old (on his bike) on at least one run during the week but don't want to make him go three days a week because he also has morning swim team practice. With this in mind I decided to switch from Monday/Wednesday/Friday to Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday.
Yesterday was my first Sunday run, and running that early on a weekend meant fewer people and a lot fewer dogs so Lucy was easy to handle for most of the run. The run was a repeat of Friday's 90 sec. run and 120 sec. walk, so I had a target for pace this time. My first mile was 1 second slower than my first mile on Friday, so I pushed myself a little harder for the rest of the run. The result, knocking 30 seconds off my 2nd mile for a time of 13:23. But for all that time, I was definitely feeling like I over did it when I finished. The ability to pace is something I have always had trouble with, and I think I'm going to start monitor my pace as I'm running and try to keep it consistent and slowly speed up, as opposed to pushing myself to the point of illness.
I also need to seriously consider a different route. For both my last two sessions the first run "command" has come at the base of the pictured incline and I'd love to start my run on something a little more flat.
Tomorrow is the last session for Week 2, it will be 84 at 9:00 with 72% humidity - fun times. It also drops the walk time from 120 sec. to 90 sec.
